Wireless broadband is a general term used for the technology
that is able to gain access to the internet wirelessly, and at
high bandwidth speeds. Wireless broadband is available on
virtually any digital device, so long as it has the proper
connectivity hardware. Such hardware can easily be attached to
most PDAs and laptop computers.

One of the most popular and well known wireless technology
standards is Wi-Fi
(Wireless Fidelity), which allows users to access the internet
over a wireless Local Area Network. The speed and range of
Wi-Fi, however, is severely limited. There is another wireless
connectivity standard, called WiMAX, which
is considerably more advanced.

WiMAX is a protocol by which signals are sent to wireless
broadband users. A WiMAX base station can theoretically beam a
signal as far as 50km (31 miles), meaning that a single station
could potentially cover an entire city (unlike Wi-Fi, which is
only available in “hotspots”).

Although WiMAX are networks are available in several major
metropolitan areas in the US, base stations are very expensive
to build, and aren’t cost effective in less densely populated
areas. Because of this limitation, WiMAX technology is not yet
available in most non-urban regions.

Although WiMAX has been a major technological achievement,
wireless broadband certainly doesn’t stop there. There are a
number of other cutting edge wireless protocols currently in
development. The most notable of these is a new protocol called
xMax, which is similar to WiMAX, but a lot more efficient. It
can cover a broader range at a lower cost, by piggybacking on
radio frequencies. Although xMax is not yet available to the
public, it will most likely be launched within the next couple
of years

Comcast Cable now offers packages that bundle digital television, phone, and Internet all in one package. It is called the Triple Play Bundle, and it is the triple steal of the cable TV industry. No more hassles of three different companies, you can have one for your phone, internet and cable. Comcast offers all three services with great rebates or cash back offers. Maybe you’re tired of that satellite service that keeps blacking out and has too many service interruptions. You can be assured that people who have satellite dishes will need to clean them off after heavy snow- they will have no other options! With the bundle packages, you have choice and great customer service.

First, Comcast Cable offers an awesome digital cable TV service that includes over 300 channels and over 40 CD music channels. With the fear of missing your favorite show gone now, you’ll be glad you switched to Comcast digital cable. Not only are parents happy with the parental control system, but children think it’s fantastic to be able to create a list of their favorite shows for ease of use before watching them later on. On-demand movies are able to be viewed right away, unlike satellite companies that make you wait for the beginning of the next round. Your on-demand movie will start quickly with just one click of your control!

Comcast also offers state of the art Broadband Internet service so you can throw away that old dial-up modem. With Comcast’s Cable Internet Service you are able to browse the internet quickly and have lightning speed downloads. Their internet connection lets you hook your TV up to each of your interactive computer and TV games, enabling you to compete with your buddies anywhere they live in the nation! Their wireless modem system won’t tie you to one computer either! You will be able to bring your computer laptop anywhere to do your work, surf the web or enjoy gaming on the internet. Comcast was a pioneer company in the industry that became a giant because of the fact that it was one of the first companies that bundled their connections with the Internet, can you say that about your phone service?

Comcast’s trademarked Digital Voice option is without a doubt among the sharpest available. Dropped calls and scratchy lines are a thing of the past with digital phone service. You will also get to enjoy the features you are used to such as call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, and voice messaging. You won’t need to get a different phone or fax number because Comcast already has the technology to do this. Unlike other digital phone services Comcast is one low price with no hidden fees for your local or long distance calls. Perhaps you signed up for an introductory digital phone service. But now that the promotional period is over, you are paying three times as much. Did they tell you that when you signed up? The digital phone service that Comcast offers is unique in technology and features, as well as being highly reliable!

With Comcasts surf, talk and view package, their Triple Play Package has been a success from the beginning of offering all three services in one bundle. Don’t waste your time trying to deal with three companies for all your digital needs. For crying out loud, we’re now in the twenty-first century! Order today and find out how easily Comcast Cable can create a Triple Play Package that meets your home entertainment desires.

I am starting college in the fall and need a laptop and internet however, I have no idea what to get laptop wise and I have no clue of what I need internet wise. I am going to be a business major so I really don’t need anything to creative. Please help.

If you are into movies and DVD burning, HP and Compaq computers are definitely your ticket. All HP and Compaq computers have a technology called light scribe. Light scribe allows you to make custom labels using your drives laser. You can buy these light scribe DVDs right at Best Buy. You burn what ever you want to burn as usual. Then you flip the disc over and create a label using the included light scribe control panel or Roxio Express Labeler.

For the HP line, it has light scribe as well, and it also has Quick Play. This Quick Play program allows you to watch movies without loading Vista. This saves 25% of battery power.

If you truly are looking for wireless Internet, you have 2 options:
WiMax
Cellular

WiMax is faster, but it is limited to within a city or a few cities. Just do a google search for wimax state where state is the sate you live in. A list of wimax providers should come up.

Cellular can pretty much be used where ever you can use your cell phone. You can still get some pretty good speeds.

If you just want wireless in your home, just get cable or DSL. You would then have to get a wireless router. Make sure you enable the security properly on your wireless router. I can’t tell you how many people do enable security, but I can still break into their wireless if I wanted to. You should use WPA2 authentication.

A much simpler technology to setup is powerline. You don’t have to worry about the security issues that wireless has. Check it out at http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-3.html?tag=tab

Hi,

Check your Internet Security. Do a scan with a registry cleaner, such as, RegInOut. Invalid and improper registry entries may cause such problems.

The case for a desktop:

Basically, desktops give you better performance for the buck. Budget desktops start at around $300-$400 (LCD monitor included) while the cheapest laptops will cost you at least $100 more. Desktops are easier to upgrade manually than laptops, and are harder to steal. They also tend to be more reliable than laptops, which are moved around often and are more prone to failure. Desktops also support multiple monitors easily, which may be important for hardcore programmers. Finally, serious gamers may prefer high-end desktops for the performance, especially when it comes to supporting the newest graphics cards. Overall, desktops give a better deal for raw computing power and better reliability, with support for multiple monitors.

The case for a laptop:

The main advantage of laptops is portability, which can be a huge plus for college students. Moving in and moving out out a dorm, house, or apartment with a laptop are obviously much easier than with a desktop. Your laptop will take up much less desk space than a desktop, even assuming you have a LCD monitor for the desktop. Most universities are going wireless, so having a laptop to carry around campus means you can get Internet access pretty much all over. You can also use it to take notes in class, and depending on the kind of laptop, some even allow you to use it as a notebook (see Tablets under the Laptop Buying Guide). Laptops are also much less of a hassle to take home for breaks. Overall, the advantages of having a laptop mainly revolve around its size and portability.

Which one you pick depends on your situation. What are you going to use it for? How far do you have to travel to school? What does your budget look like?

For most students, especially freshmen, I would recommend a laptop over a desktop. Unless you’re a hardcore gamer or programmer, there isn’t a huge gap in performance between desktops and similarly priced laptops for everyday programs like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Word, Excel, IM and so on. Your dorm room most likely isn’t going to be huge, and a desktop will take up more space and be much more of a pain to move in and out. Also, laptop prices have been dropping recently, not quite to the level of desktop prices, but you can get a serviceable budget laptop for around $500. See our Laptop Buying Guide for details.

Yes, there should be no problem. Wireless internet has a standard of 802.11 which is the same all over the world.

I also know this because I work for a company that is world wide, and we have laptops all over the world.

Before you can even decide what make of computer you want, whether it is a Dell, Mac or Hewlett Packard… you need to answer this burning question: will your next computer be a laptop or a desktop PC?

In order to answer this question you need to do your research. You need to familiarize yourself with both laptops and PCs. The reason that I say this is because as with all purchasing decisions there are pros and cons to whatever decision you make. In order to make the most informed decision as to which choice will be your next computer, you need to not only look into the advantages and disadvantages of each of them but you also need to make sure that you apply these pros and cons to your individual circumstances.

So what exactly are these pros and cons?

If you are looking into desktop PCs you will see that they are usually cheaper than laptops and for the money that you are paying you will get a lot more hardware/software. You get a faster computer at a lower price. That’s the main reason many gamers tend to opt for desktop PCs over laptops as they are more suited to gaming and audio/video applications. However, recent developments have meant that there are now laptops coming out that have been primarily designed for gamers. The performance gap is narrowing swiftly.

While laptop prices are falling, they are generally more expensive than PCs because of their design aspect but mainly because they haven’t been around as long as PCs. Generally over time, electronic goods such as TVs, DVD players, computers… usually come down in price as makers recoup their initial manufacturing costs.

Another plus point for a PC comes in the fact that they are easily upgradable. If you want to upgrade the graphics card to a more powerful one you can. If you want to change or add another hard drive then go right ahead. With a laptop however, they may require professional installation and in many cases you are unable to upgrade or add to the technology that appears within it. They are a lot more troublesome to deal with when it comes to modifying or repairing them.

Despite these advantages that the PC holds over the laptop hasn’t stop the popularity of laptops from growing and expanding. There are in fact now more laptops being brought than desktops and this is a trend that is set to increase.

One of the main advantages that exist with laptops is the fact that they are portable. Many people now need a laptop in order to stay more productive. They allow you to access files and data at anytime and from any location, which is a necessity for many people due to our fast paced and on the go society. Also thanks to Wi-Fi wireless networks the connectivity of laptops are amazing. You are able to gain easy access to the Internet while you remain mobile.

Another pro to having a laptop as your next computer as oppose to a desktop PC is the fact that with a laptop you have low power consumption. The reason for this is that laptops are several times more power-efficient than desktops. A typical laptop uses 20-90 W, compared to 100-800 W for desktops. I feel that this is an important feature, especially for businesses that run hundreds of personal computers as it could ensure that you have a multitude of potential savings. It is also helpful to homes where there is a computer running 24/7 such as a home media server or print server.

Nor should you ignore the aesthetic appeal of the laptop. They have great style and design which makes them attractive to potential buyers. Gaming laptops are especially decked out with flashy decor and pizazz; while you should never buy a computer for its looks, many people do just that!

These are just a few examples of the pros and cons that are associated with laptops and desktop PCs. There are good and bad points for each option, so depending on what you need your computer for you may opt for a laptop or you may opt for a PC. The most important thing is that you make your choice based on your needs to ensure that you get the most out of your computer. Satisfy your own needs first and you won’t be disappointed with your final choice.
